If you live in Victoria for six months or more, you need to convert your overseas licence to a Victorian licence. Depending on where your licence was issued and your driving experience, you may be able to convert directly, or you may need to pass tests, including the drive test.
Our conversion lessons are 60-minute one-on-one sessions with a VicRoads-accredited instructor in a dual control car. You already know how to drive, so we focus on Victorian road rules, local traffic and the drive test. Check what applies to you on the VicRoads overseas licence page.
What you need to do depends on the country that issued your licence and your driving experience. Here is how the process usually runs.

You already know how to drive. These are the local rules we spend the most time on.
Built-up areas have a default limit of 50 km/h. An overseas driver who is 5 km/h or further above a limit in the drive test fails immediately.
At set times the limit drops to 40 km/h. While a school zone is operating, any speed above its limit fails the test.
Give way to vehicles already on the roundabout, and signal when you leave it.
When a tram stops at a stop without a safety zone, you must stop behind it and not pass while doors are open.
In parts of Melbourne's CBD, right turns are made from the left lane. We explain how they work.
In the test, signal for at least three seconds before turning or changing lanes, and five seconds when pulling out from the kerb.
