Teaching driving for 5 years
Learner drivers taught by Dil get someone qualified twice over: a child & educational psychologist who is a driving instructor as well. Her roots are in Sri Lanka. — ABOUT US

Learner Permit to P Licence: How the Program Works

The Learner Permit to P Licence program is a structured set of lessons. It starts with a learner’s first drive and finishes at the VicRoads drive test. Every lesson gives a learner 60 minutes of one-on-one time. VicRoads accredits the instructor, and dual controls are fitted to the car. Learners whose address is Mitcham VIC 3132 get free pickup.

The order is fixed: car control comes first, traffic and intersections next, busier roads and higher speeds after that, and test preparation last. Between lessons, a learner logs hours practising with a supervising driver, as set out by VicRoads.

— THE PLAN

Your L to P Plan in Four Stages

Our plan follows the four stages of the VicRoads Learner Kit. The hour ranges are a guide. We move on when you are ready, not when the clock says so.

1

Car control (about 0–20 hrs)

Controls, moving off, stopping, steering and low-speed turns on quiet streets.

2

Traffic and intersections (about 20–60 hrs)

Give way rules, roundabouts, lane changes and busier local roads.

3

Variety and speed (about 60–120 hrs)

Arterial roads and higher speeds. Practise at night, in the wet and on different speed limits with your supervisor.

4

Test ready

Hazard Perception Test, a mock drive test, then the last preparation before a learner sits the VicRoads drive test.

— THE RULES

21 to under 25 6 months, without a break No logbook requirement

— WHAT IS INCLUDED

What Every Learner Driver Lesson Includes

A learner driver lesson in Mitcham always has these eight things built in, for a single booking and a full package alike.

One Learner, 60 Minutes

For sixty full minutes a learner has an instructor to themselves. Group classes are not offered, and a learner's time is not split with anyone.

Cars With Dual Controls

Learners drive a modern car, automatic or manual, that is Victorian-registered. A learner's instructor can brake from a pedal on their side.

Accredited Instructors Only

A learner's instructor is a VDIA member. VicRoads has issued them a Driving Instructor Authority that remains current, and they hold a Working with Children Check as well.

Pickup Included Across Mitcham

Learners are picked up from school, from home or from a workplace. Pickup reaches every part of Mitcham, and the suburbs of Whitehorse council beside it as well. After the lesson the learner is taken back, and neither trip is charged for.

Local Routes Learners Really Drive

Whitehorse Road and Canterbury Road are on a learner's lesson routes, as are Mitcham Road and the streets that ring Mitcham Square Shopping Centre. Lessons also reach the roads around the Ringwood drive-test centre used by VicRoads: the Mitcham Testing and Inspection Centre.

Honest Updates on Progress

A learner leaves each lesson with straight feedback from the instructor: what has improved, what still needs work, and when being drive-test ready looks likely. There are no false promises.

A Plan That Builds Each Week

Each lesson builds on the last, so you always know what you are working on and what comes next.

Test Prep When You're Ready

As a learner nears the required hours and the P licence age, lessons change to preparing a learner to sit the VicRoads drive test.

Book your learner driver lesson in Mitcham

A learner driver lesson in Mitcham is booked by filling out one short form. That business day a learner gets confirmation, and no deposit is taken. Each one comes with a dual control car, free learner pickup at a Mitcham address and an instructor accredited through VicRoads.

— WHY CHOOSE?

Why Learners in Mitcham Pick
This L to P Program

01

A Clear Plan From Day One

You always know what you are working on. Lessons build from car control to test-ready driving in a set order.

02

VicRoads-Accredited Instructors

Learner lessons come with an instructor who keeps three things current: a Driving Instructor Authority from VicRoads, their membership of the Victorian Driving Instructors Association, and a Working with Children Check.

03

Better Logbook Hours

When a lesson ends, the learner and the supervising driver both hear what to practise next, so hours entered in the logbook add up to real skill.

04

Help for Supervising Drivers

Parents and supervisors are welcome to ask questions. We explain what we are teaching so you can practise it the same way at home.

05

Local Roads, Local Test

L to P lessons run down Whitehorse Road and Canterbury Road, along Mitcham Road, then onto streets beside the Mitcham Testing and Inspection Centre.

06

Automatic or Manual

Learners can pick a manual car or an automatic for lessons. We explain how the two differ, so the licence you go for suits you.

07

Honest Progress Tracking

We give you straight feedback after every lesson and tell you when you are likely to be ready for your test.

08

Test Day Covered

Once a learner is ready, a mock test comes first, followed by Lesson + Test as a package: pickup, a warm-up, then the test itself in our car.

— FOR PARENTS

For Parents and Supervising Drivers

Most of a learner’s hours happen with you, not with us. Here is how to make them count.

Practise what we covered

Each lesson ends with the learner being told what to practise. At home, repeat it the same way.

Mix up the conditions

VicRoads says learners are more likely to pass with practice at night, in wet weather and on roads with different speed limits.

Fill in the logbook properly

VicRoads refuses to run the test when a Learner Log Book has been filled in incorrectly, and there is no refund of fees.

Keep it calm

Short, regular drives beat long, stressful ones. If a skill is not working, leave it for the next lesson.

— STILL CONFUSED?

Automatic vs Manual Which Should a Learner Pick?

Honestly, neither one wins for every learner. Either can turn a learner into a Victorian driver who is capable and safe. Which to pick turns on a learner’s budget and goals, and on what they plan to drive.

Picked by the bulk of Mitcham learners

Automatic

The easier, quicker way to get a learner on the road.
  • ✓Learners skip the clutch and skip shifting gears. That leaves attention for the road and its hazards.
  • ✓Ready for the test after 12-18 lessons which covers most learners starting from scratch.
  • ✓Calmer going for a learner who is anxious or nervous.
  • ✓Smaller total bill because learners need fewer lessons before test-readiness.
  • —The learner's licence has an auto-only condition until a conversion is completed later on.
From
$69/hr
For a licence with full flexibility

Manual

More for a learner to master, yet the licence comes restriction-free.
  • ✓No restrictions: a full Victorian licence. Lets a learner drive any vehicle later.
  • ✓A must for certain jobs, among them rural driving, trades and logistics.
  • —Learning clutch control puts 4-6 lessons on a learner's total, typically.
  • —Ready for the test after 18-24 lessons which covers most learners starting from scratch.
  • —Costs more in total because a learner's lesson count is longer.
From
$85/hr
Our straight advice to learners

If a family car is what a learner will mostly drive, begin on automatic. Learners needing a full licence for a job should choose manual.

Among Mitcham learners, the usual path is automatic first and a manual conversion later, and only when it is ever needed. Learners converting need 4-6 hours of lessons on average. A learner who then passes a manual VicRoads test has the auto-only condition taken off.

— FAQ

Popular Questions

On top of supervised hours, a typical Mitcham learner books professional lessons as well: twelve to eighteen of them in an automatic. Below are the questions parents and learners put to us most.

P

From age 16 a learner can hold a Victorian learner permit. It is issued after a pass in the learner permit knowledge test.

If a learner is under 21, the drive test is only open once the logbook shows 120 hours with a supervising driver, and 20 hours of that must be night driving.

No. The logbook rule of 120 hours is only for learners younger than 21. There is still a minimum period for holding your learner permit: 6 months for ages 21 to under 25, or 3 months once you are 25 or over.

Under 21, a learner keeps the permit for 12 months first. The drive test can only be sat after that.

A P licence is available from age 18, provided a learner has passed the drive test as well as the Hazard Perception Test.

As a guide for Mitcham learners, allow twelve to eighteen professional lessons for an automatic and eighteen to twenty-four for a manual. Supervised hours come on top of that. Ask and your instructor will estimate honestly for your case.

Yes. A manual lesson is $85 an hour. A learner whose drive test pass is in a manual car gets a P licence free of the automatic condition.

Yes. We are happy to explain what we are working on, so your supervising driver can practise the same skills with you at home.

Yes. Mitcham VIC 3132 addresses, and those in nearby Whitehorse council suburbs, get free pickup and free drop-off with each learner lesson.

— VICROADS TEST CENTRE

The VicRoads Test Centre for Mitcham Learners

Learners from Mitcham mostly book the Mitcham Testing and Inspection Centre, located in Ringwood, for the drive test. Once a learner has picked a centre, the closing L to P lessons use the roads around it.
