What to Bring to Your Driving Test: A VicRoads Checklist
The morning of your VicRoads test is not the day to discover you have left something at home. In our experience, most learners spend weeks practising reverse parallel parking and head checks, then turn up missing a document or driving a car that will not pass the pre-drive check. The paperwork and the car matter just as much as the driving itself, and getting them sorted early takes one whole layer of stress off test day.
Here is exactly what to bring to your driving test, grouped so nothing slips through. If you are testing at Bayswater or Burwood East, this is the same list our accredited instructors run through with learners the day before.
Your documents
The assessor checks your paperwork before you turn a wheel, so this is where a test most often ends before it begins. Bring these:
- Your current Victorian learner permit card. The physical card, not a photo on your phone.
- Your logbook or myLearners app showing the full 120 hours signed off, including your night driving.
- Your booking confirmation, either printed or on your phone.
- Your glasses or contacts if your permit says you need them for driving.
If you have lost your permit card, sort a replacement well before the day rather than hoping the original ID documents will do. And if you are converting an overseas licence, check your booking email closely, because the documents VicRoads asks converters to bring are not always the same. Your car
You can use your own car or your instructor’s, but VicRoads does not supply one. Whatever you drive, it has to pass a quick safety check first. A car that fails the pre-drive check means the test does not go ahead, and that is a wasted booking fee.
Before the day, confirm the car has working lights, indicators and brake lights, legal tyres, a clean windscreen with no cracks in your line of sight, working seatbelts, and a handbrake that actually holds. The car you sit the test in should be the car you have practised in, so the mirrors, biting point and seat all feel like second nature.
Yourself
The last thing to bring is the hardest to pack: a calm head. Arrive at the test centre 10 to 15 minutes early so you are not walking in flustered. Rushing is where nerves take over, and after 25 years of test-day pickups we can tell you nerves cause far more fails than a lack of skill does.
A few small things help you settle:
- Have a proper breakfast so you are not light-headed.
- Wear comfortable, flat shoes you can feel the pedals through.
- Do a short warm-up drive beforehand if you can, ideally on roads near the test centre.
Knowing your route helps too. Learners who have driven the Bayswater or Burwood East streets before test day tend to feel like it is just another lesson, because it nearly is.
The night before
Do a final pass the evening before rather than the morning of. Put your permit, logbook and booking confirmation together in one spot by the door. Give the car a quick once-over in daylight. Check the weather so you dress for it. Then leave it alone and get an early night, because a tired driver misses things a rested one would catch.
